The first coal basin to be evaluated was the Powder River Basin (PRB) in Wyoming and Montana, because it has been the most productive coal basin in the United States over the past 25 years. The results of the PRB assessment were published in Professional Paper 1809 in 2015.
Gas content in the Powder River Basin is much lower than in the San Juan Basin (Table ), but the large production of gas in the Powder River Basin suggests that low gas content is compensated by large coal volumes. This also suggests that the Powder River Basin may feature a significant contribution of free (, not adsorbed) gas in its coal.
