In Hammerwatch you buy upgrades as you go, in HoH you buy permanent character upgrades in your town, then collect items to buff yourself during a run, but the items reset every run. In my opinion Hammerwatch is best played local coop with 24 players. Heroes of Hammerwatch is best if you want to play a longer term grind.
I've read about the Tavern drink but I haven't found it yet. Grinding ore is seriously tedious to me right now. I can't get to the third boss and I can't buy anymore upgrades for my character. If I keep grinding it I'll get there but it's an extreme chore to find enough ore to upgrade the buildings again. I am sure that the popular, highly competeitive "Heroes of Hammerwatch" scene isn't going to be undone because a couple people got tired of grinding ore in order to purchase upgrades that have to also be earned through an agonizingly slow XP gain system. The game is badly gated on ore and XP.

For a level 1 Treasury, you will reach 50% tax at 10K gold. Level 2 Treasury = 50% tax at 15K gold. Level 3 Treasury = 50% tax at 20K gold. Level 4 Treasury = 50% tax at 25K gold. Yes, there is grinding in Heroes of Hammerwatch, but it's grinding that doesn't feel too daunting. If I didn't find enough ore for a particular goal, I could always use the gold I found to buy some. I can now pull the entire floor to me and kill everything (or just run and don't kill anything) but i rarely find more than 34 ores. I need 30 to unlock the next tier skil, and i feel like it's too hard after ...

If you've not found the thief yet, looking for him and unlocking the tavern gives 2 drinks by default, some of them give some nice benefits early on that could help. If you haven't, you really shouldit's a bit of a grind, but commit to a single character and get them to the power level where you're reliably making huge gains. At the tier I'm playing, a run is successful if I complete the dragon, win with about 300k gold, and also have anywhere from 150500 ore, depending on imp luck.
This is a really fun game, but it feels too grindy at the moment, and in my opinion this is exclusively due to the fact that you have permanent character upgrades in town that all cost (insane amounts of) gold. And the grind is slooow. A full grind from level 1 to somewhere in the castle leves / third boss, can take one to two hours. And the loot may be something like 2030 ore and 67k gold. The ore isn't even enough for a single upgrade and the gold barely covers a single upgrade at the blacksmith.
